What should you bring?
In order to backpack for a long time, I suggest as little as possible. I have met countless numbers of people on the road that have told me how much stuff they shipped home because they simply did not need it. When traveling, you realize how little that you actually need to get by. Think of the bare essentials with a few luxuries.
What you really need.
Clothes, toiletries, shoes
Nice extras or conveniences.
Electronics, books, and other things
In terms of what you really need, I suggest keeping in mind versatility. This will help you greatly when you are packing for your trip. The other major helping aid is the needs versus wants test.
In order to think of what clothes you are bringing, think about things that can be used in multiple settings. Furthermore, it is a good idea if you clothes can double over. For example, you have a few shirts that can be casual or more formal.
Clothing list suggestion:
- You will need a few t-shirts, and a few shirts that can be used as dressier shirts.
- A few undergarments, probably 3-5 days worth for both sexes.
- 1 pair of jeans or slacks
- 1 pair of khaki style shorts
- 1 bathing suit (If you get some that can also be used for activities, like gym shorts, this is a good idea)
- 3-5 pairs of socks
- 1 pair of flip-flops
- 1 pair of good shoes
- 1 Towel
Optional Clothing Items:
- Hat
- Undershirts
- Pajamas
- Others
Suggested Electronics:
- Cell Phone (One with an international plan, that can be used to text home updates, or call in case of an emergency. Some people can get go-phones while traveling, which might be for you).
- Computer (I recommend a small one. As weight can add up)
- Other (Like Mp3 Player or gaming devices.)
You do not have to take all of these items. I suggest these lists as a means of jogging your memory. Remember the most important consideration of packing is the more you pack, the more that you carry. Weight is the key, the less things that you take with you the better. Additionally, it is less liability for valuables and other things.
These days with the way that technology is, you can take one electronic, a Smart Phone, that can accomplish almost all of your needs. It can serve as your computer, Mp3 player, and phone.
Remember that if you leave with less stuff than you need, or end up wanting a few more things, you can always visit shops and markets along the way to pick up some more clothes. Another important consideration to keep in mind when packing is weather. Will it be cold or have the potential to get there? If so, you will need to pack more clothes accordingly. Also, take into consideration environmental concerns, like mosquitoes. Perhaps, if you plan on going into the jungle some long sleeves would be in order. Try and think holistically, but do your best not to over pack.
Brands or types that I suggest:
For Shoes:
Merrell – Why? Although Merrell shoes are a bit pricier, they are targeted at all-purpose shoes for active people. They are commonly used by hikers, workers, and travelers. I have always taken a pair of these shoes with me, I recommend them because they are good at everyday shoes, but also can be used to go out with at night. Find your pair here.
Flip-Flops – Why? You can get by without them, but I recommend them for beach trips, short walks, and shower shoes. You can get a really cheap and disposable pair of flip-flops before leaving or you can invest in a nicer pair like Crocs. It is really just up to you.
Towels – A towel is a necessary trip for beach, showering, and anything else that comes up. I have usually taken a traditional towel with me, but I have concluded that they take up too much space and take longer to dry. Therefore, on my next trip, I am taking a quick dry micro-fiber towel. I think that these are nice because they are dense and effective.
Good information to know, I could definitely apply it to my travels. Thanks amigo!
